What is Domesticity?

What does domesticity mean? I didn’t even know the word existed until my husband mentioned it, and then I thought he might have made it up. But it is a real word. According to Encarta World Dictionary domesticity means: “life as it is lived at home; the concerns of the home or family.” Domestic means: “relating to or used in the home or everyday life within a household; relating to or involving the family or people living together within a household”.

The articles that will be shared on this site will deal with home and family - everyday life. If someone doesn’t take care of the everyday life issues, what happens to the family? I think we have seen over the past 40 years what happens when the care of the family is looked down upon. Yes, people have to work, but the family needs to be taken care of. Everyone in the family can work for the common good of the family by working as a team in the household. If no one knows how to do the day-to-days, this will not be accomplished.

With so many women with children working outside of the home, this creates great stress and an enormous responsibility, but I believe it can be done through diligence and know how. Philippians 4:13 tells us that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us, but we can fail with a lack of knowledge according to Hosea 4:6.
