TIPS FOR SAVING MONEY WITH A NEW BABY
Make your own baby wipes. Recipe: You will need.... 1. A big plastic container big enough for ½ paper towel roll. 2. A good paper towel roll cut in half. 3. Put paper towel roll in container. 4. Mix 1 cup of hot water, 1 tablespoon of liquid baby soap (ex. Johnson & Johnson), 1 tablespoon olive oil 5. Pour mixture evenly over paper towel roll until wet all the way through. You will want to cover with a lid and turn upside down to make sure the whole roll is wet. 6. Open container and pull out the cardboard center. This should start your first “wipe”.
Make your own baby food. Cook food with some water until very soft. Put cooked food into food processor or blender. Place food in an ice cube tray and put it in the freezer. Each cube will make a meal. When frozen you can pop them out and store in plastic Ziploc bags.
A handy device to own is a handheld food mill. It is great when you are out. Just put whatever you are eating in the mill. Turn the crank and the food is all ground up. It is small and comes with a little case to store it in.
Purchase clothes, toys, strollers, car seats and other baby paraphernalia at thrift stores and garage sales.
Do not buy disposable bibs. Buy plastic bibs for mealtime. Plastic bibs can be wiped off after each feeding. Use cloth bibs the rest of the day if needed, for drooling.
Buy diapers in bulk, especially for the first year. This will save money and time.
Look for opportunities to use hand-me-downs. Borrow from a friend or family member who had a child before you.
Purchase clothes ahead of time. Buy clothing for next year when it is on sale this year.
Don’t buy a lot of items your baby will grow out of quickly. Because of a lack of time, you may never even get to use some things if you have too much.
Spend your money on necessities.
Purchase furniture that can be used in the future, a chest, dresser, crib that can be turned into a toddler bed….. Buy a car seat that can be used from newborn through the toddler years and not gender specific.
Sign up for coupons and free rebates.
Breastfeed.
Buy cloth diapers instead of burp cloths.
Trade babysitting services with a friend.
Utilize the library for books and DVDs and passes for Brookfield Zoo.
