You should know what you are capable of doing for a living, not just what you’d like to do.

The best time to start networking is way before you actually need a network or else you’ll just be hitting up strangers for a job.

Walk into the college career center the day you enter college. This way you have four years to prepare for the right job.

Ditch high school attitudes and behaviors.

Employers care more about a college degree than where it is from. Most CEOs of the biggest corporations didn’t go to the most prestigious schools.

Summer internships lead to job offers.

Finding a job is, in itself, a full-time job with weekend and evening work involved.

Building a resume does not mean lying or exaggerating. It means accomplishing.

Create a resume in four formats: a print version, a scannable version, a plaintext version, and an e-mail version. Same resume, four formats.

The print version of your resume is where to use bullets, italics, and of course, spell-check.

Use the plain text version (same info but without italics or bullets) to paste into online forms or database.

Always send your resume in the body of an e-mail, not just an attachment.

While posting your resume is mandatory, most jobs come from personal contacts.

Your cover letter is the door opener or door closer.

Your cover letter should stress your education, your experience, your professionalism and the opportunity you are seeking.

Never start a cover letter with “Dear Sir or Madam”. It says you were too unmotivated to learn the interviewer’s name.

Know what your references plan to say.

Apply for a specific position. Saying “I’ll do anything” will cause it to mysteriously disappear.
